Google CEO Eric Schmidt was pretty clear when he said the company “didn’t have to” make a second Nexus-series smartphone back in July, but according to UK business paper City AM all that has changed.  It’s claimed Google is working with retailer Carphone Warehouse in the UK on the Google Nexus Two.

“It looks like Google is experimenting with the future of its mobile model in the UK. It tried releasing through a single carrier, now it is trying a single retailer.  It could be a solution to the problems it experienced when it tried to sell the Nexus One exclusively through its website. People like to be able to go to a store – this solves that” anonymous source

Unknown at present is who the OEM behind the Google-branded device might be – rumors of Samsung have apparently been debunked – but the sources claim the Nexus Two will run Gingerbread.
