Most phone manufacturers nowadays are fighting to survive the mobile industry. The sudden popularity of the Chinese OEMs producing affordable smartphones with ‘good enough’ specs is what causing the top companies to lose numbers. You can’t stop these smaller manufacturers to come up with such cheap phones because they’re making a lot of money. Actually, it’s not only in China where inexpensive smartphones are being made. Some factories are moving to India so don’t be surprised if you hear new ones from this emerging market.

One company that has recently joined the cheap mobile arena is Ringing Bells. Did the name ring a bell? Nope. It didn’t but starting today, we’re certain you won’t forget this Indian startup because it just introduced Freedom 251–the cheapest smartphone in the world today at only $4. The Freedom 251 costs only Rs. 251 which is about less than $4. We know of a $10 phone from Walmart but this one is dirt cheap. With that price, anyone can easily buy a few units. Even the kids can afford one and give away to their friends.

Ringing Bells is not kidding with the Freedom 251. Don’t expect much from this one though because the specs are very low-end. But still, it’s okay with its 4-inch display screen, 1GB RAM, 8GB built-in storage, microSD card slot for storage expansion, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 3.2MP main camera, 0.3MP front camera, and a 1450mAh battery. There’s no mention about WiFi connectivity and what mobile OS is running but we’re assuming there is wireless connectivity and that it runs Android.

According to Ringing Bells, the Freedom 251 was developed with the support of the Indian government. The phone boasts of being a fully made in India phone. The government is pushing for this ‘Digital India’ vision and this phone will definitely help the idea become a reality.

The Freedom 251 is now available for pre-order until the 21st of February. Delivery will soon start and will be done before June 30 of this year. If you live in India, you can purchase the Freedom 251 from www.freedom251.com.
