aww didn't know it was every carriers policy, thanks
I had to pay $300 plus taxes, doesn't really bother me because I love my G1, its worth it to pay for.

Always wait until your contract is up or about to expire -- you're in more of a position to get something extra out of TMobile (or any other company, for that matter). Additionally, try to visit the store at the end of the month since the sales people are on sales quotas. If they're short, which I'm sure they are given the current financial situation, they'll be more likely to throw in freebies in an attempt to get a sale. Always say "well such-and-such was free with another provider", or "well AT&T has better data rates" or whatever. Never be afraid to walk away; there are numerous other TMobile stores that will bend over backwards to get/retain you as a customer. If they're not, why give them money?
I always upgrade my phones around this period when there are good deals.
As for the family plan, if you add a line for 9.99 u'll get full discount, but you'll have to pay 9.99 more for the next 5 - 8 months then can cancel your old line.... Too much of a hassle, cos u'll have 2 phones, new number etc etc...
When dealing with 611, it depends which CSR u talk to. Just be firm and insist. Tell them all your friends/family got the G1 and did the same thing... Heck, Tell them I told you!
Good Luck!
Dumb? Yes, though every other carrier has the same policy, all providers are more interested about generating revenue then giving you a new phone.
Could be worse, you could be stuck with my T-Mobile MDA that doesn't receive voicemail or phone calls.
