All my life, I consider giving 15% is a good average to give tips at the restaurant. If they provide excellent service than you leave more or if the service is really bad, you leave less or none at all.
Just recently, I went to a restaurant and on the receipt, it gives you how much tip you could leave. It's says, if you want to leave 15% you leave this much, 17% you leave that much, and 20% you leave this much.
I said to myself, "Wait a minute... since when do we have to give this much tip?".
Maybe times has changed and now people leaving more tips.
So on the average, how much tip do you leave at the restaurant?

Being a server in the past I try to think of how attentive the server was. I know that if they are not always checking on you they are messing around in the back because I have seen it in many places.
Second is the ability to get things right. They may not be the cook but they should be able to remember my order since they often times write it down. It is not hard to see if something has mistakenly been done with your order. If they can remember your order without writing it down then that adds 5% at least for me. Its just not easy.
And say I got something small that was say 8 dollars, 15% (the standard minimun) would be $1.20. That is hardly fair when the time and table you took could have been say a party of 4 that would generate a much larger tip. I always think to myself what can be purchased with this tip? Can you get a gallon of milk, or a gallon of gas? If the answer is no then its not much of a tip in my mind.
That's my 2 cents.

depends on a lot of factors..... most important, my mood...

I have understanding that servers working in the restaurants are there to earn money not to work for free. Even if the service is bit average not that great I usually leave good tips - 20% avg - 25% max - 15% min - they have to live too![]()

Some of them don't deserve more than the 2 or 3 dollars an hour they make. Man I wish more people like you would sit at my table. I worked at one place that I am not going to state that had a certain clientele that "didn't know" they had to tip so even the best servers would go home with 35-40 dollars a night. This restaurant being a mid grade every day restaurant.
On the other hand a very close competitor that is the same on all fronts was much better because of the clientele. The pay there was 80 on a bad night and 180 on a good night. Same shirts same everything. Just different customers. Even the bad servers got a good deal of money.
after working off tips for most of my young adulthood i am a very generous tipper![]()
I always leave at least 20% unless the service was exceptionally poor. I definitely believe in stiffing people who aren't trying their best but really rewarding the people who do make an effort.
I have worked many jobs where tips were a big part of my income, and now I consider myself a generous tipper as well. When you work for tips, you remember good tippers, so when you see them again, you make sure to provide them the same exceptional service as before, in hopes of a good tip again.
15% avg
But I have given 30 dollar tips to waiters that treat me good.. I hate it when they think I'm an 18 yr old in there to waste their time..in reality I'm 23. If they treat me good...like tip don't matter..I would leave them high percentage tip.
