I had a similar but different experience with Apple. My machine started to catch fire and then had me on the phone for ages, only to email me the next day telling me where I could "get it fixed." Meanwhile the guys at the Genius Bar had already told me the laptop was toast and not to ever turn it on again. What a bunch of !erks.
Dell's customer service has been abominable in my experience, but at least my Dell has never caught fire.
