(preventing a threadjack)
in 1988 a 286 with 640k RAM and a 20MB hard drive. I think it ran at 22mHz, but it had a turbo switch so you could slow it down to 8mHz for games that ran too fast. |

I don't really remember the specs at all of the computers I grew up with, but my dad bought our first family computer I think about 1992 or so.
Personlly, the first computer I have owned was the one I got for high school graduation in 2003.. 3ghz, 512MB ram.... Which was slowly upgraded through the years and now was just recently replaced by a laptop (FINALLY, I've wanted a laptop ever since I got my desktop haha). Looks like I'm just a youngster compared to some of the PC's around here :P

My first 'computer' was a Radio Shack TRS-80 - Laptop. It cost me $50 buck (used), and I got a printer

all i know is that it was a 286(i believe) from my dad's work.
i definitely know that it had cabal on it. when we got it, it was like people having 2 TVs in "back to the future" ...like no one had a PC. It was great. |

It's a shame I can't even remember the name of my first computer. It was basically what my Dad had bought for some BASIC programming. It was a keyboard/computer in one and used to hook into our CRT TV for a computer screen. I remember having a few books and spending entire summer afternoons typing about 2000 line programs just to play games like hangman
. Then we used to record those programs on Audio Tapes using a tape recorder, which could be loaded back to the computer at a later time. Wow. good old days. I'd appreciate if anybody could tell me the name of that computer. It's not one of the ATARI 8 bit series or neither a Commodore. It was shiny, all black, possibly different brand. Actually, my dad still has it, well preserved, in working condition. My next desktop was a 233MHz Pentium MMX (I guess one between Pentium 1 and 2), with a 2GB HDD and 16MB RAM . We then upgraded to a 4GB HDD in 1997 and at that time, I thought "When am I EVER going to fill up all that hard drive space?". I still remember dual booting Windows 98 and Red Hat 7 on that one. And oh yes! It had that famous turbo button on it too. Surprisingly, I had no clue what that button did, until today when OP mentioned it. Thanks OP.Starting 2004, I've had various modern laptops, which kinda gets boring now . Older days were fun.

My first personal computer was a Pentium 133mhz (turbo-switch equipped) with a whopping 16mb ram and 500mb harddrive space. Later I upgraded it to a 2x CD burner and loved IRC/Napster, made me some money in school.
Next build? Quad core pentium OC'ed to 3.2-3.4ghz, 4gb ram, ATI x4570, and 2-4tb harddrive space... Hopefully by the end of the year. |

I don't remember the specs of my first computer. I remember it was an eMachine that cost me $1,200. I had to get a personal loan from the bank in order to pay for it. I believe that was in 1998. Heck, I didn't use computers on a regular basis until I got to college in 1992.

486 33mhz w/ 4mb RAM (at first) and a 512mb hard drive.
I remember when my parents paid almost $200 to upgrade the ram to 8mb. I cant remember if that one had the 2x CDROM and the 14.4 modem or if that was the next computer we got. ahhh... my memory is shot. I think i mainly used it for playing lemmings, duke nukem and wolfenstein. I think it was Doom 2 that drove me to nag my parents enough to get a new computer. haha!
