Currently the G1 does not support UMA. UMA is what is needed for wifi calls to be possible.
My blackberry pearl allowed me to connect to wifi and make calls and send texts...why doesn't the G1 have this? Could we ever see something like that on the G1? I tried searching the forums and I couldn't find any good info...it would be great to hear if anyone knows anything about this! Thanks

I still don't understand why UMA isnt "supported" on the G1... I wouldn't think it was a Tmo issue, and its not a hardware issue.... the only thing I have read that shows it as a threat to is 3G... Which makes no sense to me. (of course, the latter part of that last sentence made no sense to me either, so maybe I just need sleep)
It is most definitely a TMO issue as it would have to be converted/handed back from the web, through their digital system and onto the telecom lines which they must pay access fees for. Usually its a pittance, but in this instance it was probably one more thing they would have had to have negotiated and so they left it out.
I most def don't know what you're talking about. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue but tmo is not holding back UMA on android because of cost. lol
What is this UMA and why is it necessary? I thought VoIP would make WiFi-based voice possible? And it's pretty easy to send SMS over WiFi -- most carriers proxy emails to text messages.
