i have no idea. i know that there is a standard for them, and i'm sure the standard specifies the format(algorithm?) they're to be encoded in. so i'd assume that when it's scanned, the scanning device knows how to decode it into the original data.

or maybe raptors designed them, and every time you scan one, a little raptor in the device decodes it. i think that's it.
