not sure if it's been said yet, as I'm walking out the door and don't have time to read, but

your TV doesn't have to be HD ready... If you get your cable through a coax coming from your wall - you're already set. the convert box is only for tvs that get signal via ota using an antenna...

At least I think that's right - I could be completely wrong...

    PEACE OUT

Correct, if you have cable or satellite...you do not need them

While this may not add up to a tremendous amount of money, this is one of the things that drives me absolutely berserk about our government. Why do we have to GIVE people stipends for the converter box??? If someone needs one, then they should GO OUT AND BUY ONE ON THEIR OWN! Un-freaking-believable...

The only reason we need to buy them is because the government arbitrarily decided that the country should switch from analog to digital and should do so on a certain date. These are considered the "public" airwaves and the government is responsible for regulating them and getting compensation if those airwaves are licensed to companies.

So if the government wasn't offerring these coupons then you or others would be accusing them of unfunded mandates because they would be arbitrarily demanding that we change on a certain date (maybe a date that is too early as most of us don't have digital tvs) and not paying for the change itself. It only makes sense that since the government is getting licensing fees from the companies that are using the new digital frequencies and will be getting money from the companies that will lease the old analog frequencies for new uses, that it share some of the revenue with the public to help them make this government mandated change.

They also arbitrarily decided that you have to buy unleaded fuel, you can't buy R-12 refrigerant, and cell phones had to go all digital. But they didn't provide stipends to help you buy a new car, a new A/C unit, or a new cell phone. The government has no money except what they take from us or print. Think about it. There is no reason to subsidize digital converter boxes...
