First - you don't need the screws for the connection to work, only to keep the cable from slipping out. So plug it in (have someone hold it in if necessary, just for a few moments to test) to see if you still have video - if not, more than just screws were broken.
You can definitely use the HDMI-out to go to DVI. There are adapters readily available.
The only potential hiccup I can see with using HDMI is that I've heard of some systems where you might need to switch something from within the PC's OS to make it start using the HDMI out (could be a problem if the VGA connector is in fact hosed). Hopefully though yours just outputs through it automatically.
