same here. I really love everything centralized in one place and the security of the online backup. I tag my clients' projects automatically so it's easy to exclude the "noise" of not onlymy gmail stuff, but my other biz emails as well.

does anyone use that utility that lets you have more than one gmail account open? I haven't done this yet, but I was thinking about it because I have an account for online stuff tha tis not time sensitive (mainly my lists for crafts, fan and hobby stuff) and I'm trying to get my inbox under control. Any insights on how that type of feature would translate to Android?

I'm not a big fan of doing all of my email in a web client though, but I understand that gmail now has IMAP access, so that should also help. This just may work out just fine. Someone should right a tutorial on this--I have a feeling there will be a lot more people trying to do the same thing real soon. I saw one other guy here today that wanted to do it with his Yahoo mail, and I can imagine that would be a lot harder. At least in my case it is my own domain.
EXACTLY! Oh, just read down and saw you got it working. Cool. Once you get used to the FILTERS (i couldn't remember that word earlier for the life of me) you will find this so much more flexible -- at least I did. And when you get comfortable, check out the labs. There is one that moves your signature up to immediately below your replies instead of at the bottom of your emails. This is really important to me so clients don't have to work hard to find my contact info and web link.

Now if you get any tips on quickly getting the contacts filled in besides paying my kids to do it, fill me in. I've got contacts in Palm address book and have never gotten more than a handful of details into gmail.

If you go into your settings of your gmail account and go to " accounts" the firsty line will say "send gmail as" you can change that to whatever email address you want. this is what it says about that feature....

Gmail's custom 'From:' feature lets you send messages with another address in place of your Gmail address, making it easier to manage multiple accounts from the Gmail interface.

I hope this helps you out

Couple more things to point out then now you've made the switch to Gmail...

Email Storage - not a problem. Google keep increasing the amount and since I started some 4 months ago its gone from 6.5Gb to 7.5Gb. enough for tens, if not hundereds of thousands of emails.

Webmail - When I first started using Gmail I stuck on my main PC to using Thunderbird as my email client with gmail using IMAP. But over the next 2 months I slowly started using the webmail more and more as I got used to it and now it's all I use. It just takes time to get used to doing things in a slightly different way.

POP3 checking - gmail only seems to connect to and check your pop3 accounts at intervals between 30-60 mins ( It almost seems random!). But if you expect an email in you can force gmail to check a pop3 account in 'Settings' then 'Accounts'

Inbox clutter - gmail puts all your emails into the Inbox by default, even if you use filters to apply Labels to different accounts etc. I would recommend disabling this in the account settings(something like 'skip the inbox and archive emails' . This keeps your inbox clutter free , and it's easy to find your emails in the different 'labels'.

Contacts : Cant really advise you here - My contacts were a complete mess and I've only just sorted them out manually on my WM phone and then synced that with gmail using OggSync software. I would hope that someone would sort out some proper munti-sync/import software for Android soon as it could be a big help.

Feel free to ask any other questions.
I'm going to be so jealous come October as I have to wait until at least the end of January to upgrade my mobile.
I just hope that HTC bring out their own independant Android phone soon as my network here in the UK, Orange, normally get their good stuff such as Touch, Diamond etc

I am getting there. Last night I uploaded my inbox of the last four years of emails totaling about a gig. Only using 12% of my gmail storage, so I'm not too worried. Tonight I will upload my sent items and I will be done.

As for contacts, I found a cool program that may or may not help you.
    http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/index.html

It allows your local thunderbird to see your contacts on the gmail LDAP server. I installed it, it's free, open source and works great.

Anyway, I've got all my mail forwarding to gmail now, and I've got the replies set up so it looks like I'm replying from my home address. It Just Works. Very cool. And if I need to, I've still got my desktop where I can see either account (the "real" or the gmail). Awesome.

With all the help here from everyone, shouldn't be too tough of a transition. Really depends on what you're converting from.

I never used gmail before either. I've spent the last two days getting set up the way I want it. Fortunately there is a lot of good help here. What's your question?

What about if I have my personal domain hosted on Google Apps? I use the Gmail web client now, but login with my personal domain that doesn't end in @gmail.com -- will the Google Apps login work with the G1...?!

That's a good question. The service manual doesn't go into detail at all on this. I would hope so, but who knows?
