At least the Apple connector can do SO much more than just USB since it can interface with FM transmitters and stereos for A/V output and remote control. I somehow doubt this connector can do anything other than USB and audio.

IANAE (I Am Not An Engineer) but they probably didn't include a 3.5mm jack because they either didn't have the space internally for it or the connection would have been too noisy with all RF. Still sucks though--I had a Motorola phone that was like this and the only 3.5mm dongles available were line-out adapters with no volume control.

No, you need something to convert the mini-USB port to the audio, I think only HTC phones use them.

Just to clear this up, I just posted this in the other thread about Negatives about the phone, but on every HTC phone that I have had it has been possible to charge and transfer data to the PC using a normal generic mini-USB cable. The only thing that the proprietary connection enables is the audio transfer.

I have not seen the converter for the moto phones, but all of the converters I have seen have looked like this:

a quick search yielded this for older HTC phones:

And this video, at the 5:00 point, he says "a simple USB cable to connect to a PC". Too bad he didn't say "any regular USB cable", but "a simple USB cable" does sound promising. Although, HTC may consider their cable "simple".

Yeah, most of them aren't that bad, anything with the proprietary mini-USB on one side and the 3.5mm on the other is going to work. You can get them on ebay very cheap, but generally very cheap quality as well.

His reply in the other thread was to my post about the negative, and I did research to double check and yet the ExtUSB port can accept a standard mini USB cable.
