Default Why did I get a new SIM card?

I ordered the G1 from T-Mobile as an upgrade. When it arrived I was suprised to see a new SIM card in the box. Not being the type to read instructions, I installed the new card and powered up the phone. No joy. Then, I removed the SIM and took the one I was currently using in my Treo680 (came with my t-mobile Treo600) and put it in the G1. Now, all was right in the world.

Later that day, I was a bit bored so I started reading the material that came with the phone. I couldnt find any mention of the SIM card.

My question to all you is... is there any reason I should be using the card that came with the phone? Was I supposed to call T-Mobile to activate it?

to put in your old fone and be able to move your contacts to your g1. That's what I think anyway. If you notice, you won't be able to make calls or send text. All it does is allow you to access your fones menu.

I guess they might of included it by mistake. I would say hold on to the one sim card your not useing just incase something happens to that one (exceed sim pin unlock tries)or if you loose your phone at least you dont have to buy a new sim card.
cant put this damn phone down...

They all seemed to have shipped this way. As for your activation question. There is nothing that can be "activated" to make that card work or not work. It is simply just a hardware device that has no intelligence. Simply a memory chip. The only thing that could hinder it from functioning with your phone is either the file system on the card is formatted to something else other than fat32 or one that the phone will be compatiable with, or you have a bad memory card. Think of your new phone as a mini computer. Under the hood it functions just like your home computer with a very slim installation of linux on it. Based on your question i see your not very fimular with this stuff. Feel free to ask any questions on things that you come accross.

In my case, I called T-Mobile to activate my pre-ordered phone. They told me just to take the SIM card out of my old phone and put it in the G1.

I then informed them that my old phone was 6 years old and that the SIM card metal contacts didn't look at all similar. It didn't seem like a good idea to try it.

So they just transferred over my account to the SIM card that came with the G1....pretty much worked instantly after that.

I just pulled my old contacts off via bluetooth.

I received the same answer and all is fine. I was told to hang on to the new SIM in case I needed a replacement in the future.

After talking to some of the reps today, they suggested that anyone who's SIM card is more than 2 years old should probably replace it with the new one. Old SIM cards can cause all sorts of weird issues like not being able to connect to the data service, the OS not being able to read the phone number, etc.
