Rooting is the process by which you regain administrative access to your phone. It opens up otherwise impossible options to your phone.

Maybe this guy wanted to literally ROOT his G1. In which case I would personally recommend that you get some top quality soil from Home Depot (not the el cheapo $5/bag ones) and bury the G1 in a flower pot with the soil. Water it daily. I promise you that if you follow these steps, you will be making a lot of very excited postings here on AC very soon. Good luck!
