What is root?

What exactly is "root" and why is everyone so eager to have it? I'm reading through posts, but am not sure what the advantage is.

Root is like administrator access in Windows XP/Vista. See this thread for your other questions, XDA developers guys are experts. I use root for many reasons other than geek factor

I mean people be asking that question like they're the first person to do so...

At this point in time, all a person has to do is type ( root ) in the search engine.

And they'll see 15 pages of threads

Which is what I did and saw several posts from people whining that they want it and others explaining how to get it. I could not, however, see any good descriptions for wtf it actually is.
