I was talking with a few other developers today, and Android came up. One of the subjects we talked about was that while there were a few cool and original ideas out there already, they weren't really much more than novelties. Most of the demand (and therefore, developer interest) right now is focused on copying functionality from other platforms (office, exchange, virtual keyboards etc.)

Those things are great, and we all want them, but the really cool thing about android is that it really lets you be creative as a developer (look at the barcode scanners for example). Once the majority of developers get away from copying and into creating, we should see some neat stuff, but will we see something that irreverably changes the way we use mobile devices?

If so, what do you guys think android's killer app will (or would on some future device) be?

In my opinion you get VLC working on Android.. And it wont get any better than that for multimedia. Compatibility with most formats of video.. You'd be able to stream audio off of websites that was exclusive to only windows Mobile devices, etc.

    Thats my dream.

I think an app that alerts you when you are exceeding the speed limit (or a speed limit you define) would be a creative co-use of accelerometer and maps

Definatley without a doubt Android would become HUGE if it got Flash, Definatley a game changer. I also think Android should run somthing that would be like a universal remote to your life, It controlls TV, DVD, Audio, your computer, lights in your house, tempature in your house, alarm on your car, alarm on your house, and much more. that would be amazing.

An app that instantly notifies you when new apps are on the market, lol.

I think the following apps would make or break Android / G1:

    * Quake 1 or better in multiplayer over WiFi / Edge / whatever
    * A tethering app (lets you use Android as a modem)
    * DECENT Sat Nav software. I have no doubt that TomTom / Mio / everyone else will market their software for the Android platform eventually, it'll be a very profitable market, I think the day for PND's (Portable Navigation Devices) is coming to an end as people just use their cellphones with built-in GPS
    * VLC - being a regular to their IRC channel (#videolan on FreeNode IRC), I know these guys won't hesitate to bring VLC to Android, its only a matter of time

I need flash! I think that if we can view any video streams online or at least access online web chats, that would be pretty sweet
