A "web developer" is a "regular programmer", unless you mean "web developer" as in "I write web pages". Still, if you know any object-oriented language, Javascript aka ECMAscript included, it's a reasonably simple jump to Java as the underlying concepts are the same.
I'd recommend reading the freely available Thinking In Java book.
I'm a PHP/Javascript/XHTML/CSS guy...not a whole lot of Java type stuff in there...though there is a bit of OOP with PHP...but not as much as Java...I don't think
Again...I will be attempting to write native apps...just thought I would see how a web app performed and what type of response it gets
