Default Terrible Problem: Home Screen/Desktop is empty and can't save changes to it

I've had my g1 since launch and I was thinking to myself tonight how it just keeps getting better and better, AND THEN: I rebooted the phone, and the homescreen is blank! All three screens are totally blank. I thought it was hung up but after about 10 minutes I started to get worried. Rebooted again: same thing. I then tried to add a shortcut to the desktop and it worked - except I rebooted and it was gone again!!

Has anyone else had this problem? Where does this stuff get stored on the filesystem? Maybe I screwed something up.

I had just installed ES File Explorer and Taskiller. I also have a TON of other apps. I had just finished moving some files from a PC to the SD card on the phone using ES Explorer right before I rebooted.

have you tried a factory reset ?
thats the first ive read of this problem , but a factory reset could help . if you need to back something up , do it before you reset . after reset , you sign back in to google , your contacts will resync if you have synced with googles servers . also your apps will come back , you will have to reinstall them though .
2 ways to factory reset ....
1st , press menu on your homescreen , press settings , press sd and phone storage , scroll down , factory reset ...
    or
2nd . power off , power on pressing the home button and power button together , when you see the exclaimation point press alt+L buttons together , then press alt+w to wipe the phone .
    welcome to A/C btw
    good luck !

Ok thanks for the tip. What do you mean your apps will come back but I will have to reinstall them? I have SO many apps. I guess I should write them down first. So many settings in all these apps!

After about 5 reboots and waiting awhile, the old desktop icons finally returned! The strangest thing happened tho: the new icons that I had added while the desktop was blank overlapped on top of my old icons and widgets. I deleted the overlapping new icons and the ones below still worked. Some very strange bug indeed. Thanks for the tips, if problems persist I will factory reset.
