T-Mobile APNs

Just got my G1 today. Went into the settings/wireless controls/mobile network settings and found an option for Access Point Names. I clicked a random one (still getting used to the trackwheel thing).

1. Did I accidentally select an incorrect/non-default one? Does clicking on it (bringing up the detail page where you can edit it) actually SELECT it or just show you the details?

2. If I did accidentally select the "wrong" one, what is the "right" one? There were lots of networks listed... T-Mobile A, T-Mobile A MMS, lots of others for other countries, lots of different T-Mobile US (with lots of different numbers after each one).

Any ideas?

You're not selecting anything. You're just viewing/editing.

Note, however, that while editing you can screw your phone. You might want not to mess with these settings, particularly the username and password that some or all of them require. I don't know that anyone here has that info, and if not, I suppose the only way to get it back (if t-mo won't give it out over the phone) is via a factory reset.

If you are in the US, your G1 will automatically use the APN titled...wait for it...."T-Mobile US"

In case you messed with it, the settings are:

APN: epc.tmobile.com
Username: none
PW: ****** (don't know what it is)

In other words, if you have a SIM card that was meant to work with this phone, don't mess with the settings. They're in there the way they're supposed to be.

I have a new G1 not unlocked. It is registered OK, but I want to use another T-Mobile SIM which has a Blackberry data plan associated with it, not G1.

It works fine for voice calls, but not data. Is there a way to force it to use the APN that I know works with the BB SIM... wap.voicestream.com. I know this works for most GPRS connections, but can't get the G1 onto it.

After updating to these ADP(Android Dev Phone) roms;

I found I could not login in to my tmoblie us data account, and after verification failed, by clicking Menu and checking my default APN Access Point settings, I was able to sign in again.

Anyone know what MCC and MNC are for? Mine are 310 and 260, respectively, and AFAICT everything works for me wireless-wise. Everything else in my APN setting is the same as this post, though...

Running Cyanogen 3.6.7.2, radio 2.22.19.26I, and Cyanogen's Pimped Out Recovery.

Not sure which SPL I've got. Nor how to tell, for that matter.

Are in the USA? Does your new phone have cupcake? Since cupcake, the lengthy list if APNs has been reduced to one, which has options of course.

Anyway, for you and other users, here is the answer:

BlackBerry plans will not work on non-BB devices, except, as you noted, voice calling.

Why: BB data is routed though RIM servers, commonly called BES and BIS. Since a WinMo or Android device doesn't properly format the data for BES/BIS servers, they will not work. The reverse is also true. A regular data plan will not work on a BB.

PS - The SIM does not define which data plan you have--the carrier does. The SIM is more or less a key (with a little memory) that let's you in the door, so to speak.

Not actually true if you have the BB BIS data plan (BES may be a different story)
BB Case in point.
I have two BB devices. I have used both a BB 7290 and a BB 8310 device using a simple "pay as you go" (i.e. no specific data plan, just horrendously expensive) SIM card and have been able to call, text and access the web.

WRT the G1, I used my TMobile Blackberry " BIS Data Plan" SIM card in a G1 and was able to both make calls and access the web.

This was with a G1 that had been factory reset and so I had to go through the Google account setup. This was all done using my Blackberry BIS data plan.

I will add however, that I have subsequently reset the G1 (using ALT-W) and *now* have a data connection issue with accessing the Google servers.

I should have left well alone when it was working :-)
