Spacebar behavior in browser

In the browser when typing a term to search in the address bar, hitting the spacebar automatically inserts ".com". Is there a way to disable this to allow searching for phrases of two words or more?

its because it defaults to putting in a url. You have to hit the search button to switch it to search mode. When the button on the right switches from "Go" to the magnifying glass is when it is in search mode. I hate that it does this.

Mine just started doing this and its driving me crazy. Where is this search button you speak of that will switch it back???
