I've spent a few hours cleaning up my Gmail contacts. When you use gmail you never really have to think about your contacts since gmail automatically saves everything from everyone.

I've cleaned things up to about 100 contacts but still have nearly 300 in "suggested contacts" which I don't think will download to the phone. I just wish Gmail would give you more options for the contacts (birthday, anniversary and so on...)

If you don't want it to sync some of your gmail contacts then you have to create a Group on G-mail (or multiple groups) of contacts you don't want to add. Once you've created that group press the call button (green phone on chin) and then go to the contacts tab. Once you've gotten there press the "menu" button on the phone, go to settings, go to sync groups. You have to de-select "Sync all Contacts" and then go through and select which groups you want to be synced (obviously leaving out the group you created for the contact you don't want on your phone.) You have to be sure that "My Contacts" is de-selected as well, because that is the folder in gmail that has all of your contacts. If you have questions pm me, and if anyone else has an easier way to do it let me know.

Agreed on the birthday! As of now I just have to manually type in the birthdays and anniversaries into the "Notes" section on gmail.. Be much easier if there was a dedicated section for bdays and anniversaries.

I sent Google an email with these suggestions and a link to this thread. I hope they will listen.

We need to get as many people to respond to this thread in agreeance so that google will see that this needs to be done! Respond with some sort of "yes" answer if you would like gmail to give us the ability to enter birthdays and anniversaries (or other important days!) in the contact information.

Agreed, Birthday and other events need to be added! I kept all that information on my MDA. Now that I have my g1, I have been missing people's birthday's left and right. I get called on it all the time. People cannot understand why I am no longer keeping up with events. I travel a lot so I depend on my phone a lot as well. Having important dates such as birthdates is best on the phone, with a reminder!
