What you need to do is this:

1. Call customer service (611)
2. Say "upgrade phone"
3. Tell the person you need to change to postpay services so you can preorder the G1
4. Get approved
5. Hang up
6. Get on computer
7. Pre-order
8. Take sedatives and hibernate until Oct 22nd

SmartAccess - Similar to postpay, but with a $150 spending limit, if you go over the service is suspended

FlexPay - Is technically prepaid, but you pay monthly. You'd have to upgrade to monthly which would require a credit check.

Just contacted T-Mobile as of 8:20 (cen) and was informed that an upgrade from SmartAccess to postpaid services would induce a one-year contract. This would negate the $179 pre-order price which is dependent upon upgrading to a two-year contract. Apparently they always recommend upgrading the phone before switching contract types.

Back to the dreadful month long wait.

No.

I asked specifically if it would affect my upgrade, and was told that it would NOT. I made sure to ask multiple times, because I was worried as well. He finished it, said my contract would expire October 09.

Guess what? I signed online and STILL got the full discount.

It DOES extend the contract, but it doesn't affect your upgrade, as odd as that sounds.

Nope it doesn't mean that. I changed my plan a few months back and was worried about changing because I know they extend your account when changing service plans. The first agent I spoke with said it will NOT affect my upgrade discount, and the second one said it WOULD. Well, I changed plans anyway, and lo and behold it didn't affect the upgrade whatsoever. I was told by two different people yesterday that the postpay switch would extend the contract, but would NOT affect my upgrade discount. One person did say that it would mess up my discount, but obviously not everyone there knows what they're talking about.

You'll be fine, switch and upgrade. It doesn't make sense for them to negate your phone upgrade simply because you change plans, and tmobile tries to stay sensible.
