Why are you here? Just curious.
So why run android when I can run a desktop OS (XP, Linux or W7) and have a VOIP service? Maybe android really won't stand the test of time...
My next phone will be served up through data networks and run a desktop operating system. =D How bout you?
Mobile technology is about to explode and 4g ubiquitous data networks will be the catalyst.

1. Why would you need a full desktop OS to run VOIP?
2. What makes you think Android couldn't become a full desktop OS if necessary? It is LInux, runs a 2.6.25 kernel at present...
3. Why would you want to run a full desktop OS? Just means heavier demand for processor power, memory, and of course much heavier power demands so shorter battery life or a bigger, heavier (and hotter) battery.
Delivery via data networks (I suppose you mean 'cloud computing') is one of the main reasons not to need to run a full desktop OS. It's more 'out there' instead of 'in there'.Mobile technology is about to explode and 4g ubiquitous data networks will be the catalyst.
For mobile devices, less is more, lighter is better. It's like a picnic vs home dining. Pack only what you need, leave the kitchen sink at home.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! I hate being able to carry around a small phone when I can instead build muscles by carrying around a desktop all day. I wish more people would understand that it's not just because I get free VoIP service (where there's a WiFi network, anyway), but I'm exercising at the same time. The same cannot be said of the stupid people that buy the iPhone or the G1. I bet they're fat, too.
The LCD is a bit of an annoyance, though. But at least I don't have to text with just my thumbs like those people with iPhones and G1s!
(note for the comedically challenged: the above is sarcasm)
(also note that I have a hilarious mental image of someone carrying around a desktop with an LCD precariously balanced on top trying to fit through subway doors in New York city while texting a friend).
Uhhh... perhaps you would like to look at the devices you are bashing?
Once WiMAX and LTE standards are deployed in 2010, people are going to want desktop operating systems in their pockets -- there will be no more sacrifice with mobile devices. (I would point you to the fact that Windows 7 is being developed with this in mind) The Intel Atom chips along with Nvidia's Tegra will enable mobile desktop experiences with little sacrifice of performance and no compromise in functionality.
Check out these prototypes:
Elektrobit's WiMAX enabled MID
Aigo P886
Asus R50A
WiBrain i1
BenQ MIS S6
Clarion MiND
Compal's MID
Lenovo's MID
LG's MID
Among others...
Note that these units will run Windows or Linux.
My question is this... once 4G networks are in operation and these devices on the market (2010)... who would want anything less than a mobile desktop experience?

so in the mean time ill enjoy my g1 :]
see ya in 2010
RISE ABOVE
Well to be fair, 2010 is when 4G standards (LTE and WiMAX) will launch into the mainstream...
in the meantime, some of these devices use 2/2.5/3G HSPA and GSM standards so there really is no need to wait THAT long.
Also, until then, I'll be enjoying my G1 also. =D
I'm simply saying that perhaps android won't enjoy such long term success with desktop OSs available on mobile platforms very soon.
