Take a look at this guide here, it should help you in rooting your phone easily.
I have a few questions about it. First of all, whats the point in rooting, or jailbreaking (is there a difference in the two), your G1? Pros/Cons and such. I have found a good source on a how-to guide, HERE. Is this the latest way? Is this been confirmed to work? How long does it take? Any thing else along those lines... Secondly, does it break your "terms of service" with T-Mobile, Google, or anyone else? Third, how many RCs are there (RC29, RC33), whats the difference and witch is the latest and what do they do? If these questions have allready been asked/answered just point me in that direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Basically the entire rooted G1 community is dependent on one guy(mostly). You'll always be in the know of the updates if you linger/search Android Community.
Google Chrome OS??
THIS is the most complete guide I've found and the one I used. The benefits of root access are explained there as well. These include being able to use custom firmware which will enable auto-rotate and multi-touch as well as the installation of custom themes (available all over including HERE and HERE). Root also allows you to terminate programs using the task manager app available from the market. Also, it will enable you to install apps directly to your sd card. And much, much more (if you're feeling particularly ambitious, you might even be able to install a full linux distribution such as Debian!).
The basics are you have to be on a hackable version (such as RC29. The guide I linked to explains how to get there). Then you exploit a little bug (explained in the guide) to get access to the root. Then you load custom firmware which you can get HERE (scroll down to the bottom and click on the link named JFV1.42 RC33 (1419)).
As far as the TOS, I don't really know because I got insurance on my phone when I bought it. Talking with t-mobile, I found out that their insurance covers this (though you still have to pay a deductible to get it replaced). This makes sense; since it would cover me if I threw my phone against the wall, of course it would cover any damage I did to it, intentional or not.
Hope that helps a little!

Oh, and some things to be aware of:
This process will wipe your phone's memory, so I recommend grabbing the mybackup app from the market and backing up your data and apps to the sd card.
Also, this process will require you to reformat your sd card, so I recommend dropping its contents onto your computer wholesale, so you can then put them back in after.
Just some thoughts.
Thanks much! I plan to give it a try when i get home from work today. Anyone else with extra help, LEMME KNOW!!! HA. I cant wait till i get home to give this a go.
