i rooted my phone for only one reason, and now i could honestly care less about having it rooted anymore.
for some reason, my phone would not allow me to download or even VIEW paid apps from the market. i bought it brand new last week, and my wife also got one at the same time. she was able to look at and buy paid apps, but i wasn't. i called t-mobile and they were no help, and told me to contact google about it (which is a lost cause in itself)
anyways, i read a post where a guy said he rooted his phone when having this issue and the problem was resolved. low and behold, after rooting i downloaded the app i wanted with no problem. but now my g1 doesn't recognize my car charger, which is a bigger issue since i often charge my phone in the car. i don't necessarily care about any of the other "advantages" of having root, so i'd like to revert to stock firmware
i have searched and searched for a tutorial to no avail. i keep seeing people say "just do a wipe", or "download the stock fw and re-update" or "put the RC29 back on it and it will auto update", or the worst of them all "just keep it rooted, no reason to remove it". none of these solutions necessarily help me since they are all different solutions and i want to do it the right way.
can someone just give me the steps? i'd really appreciate it, thanks
Stock is the new Root.

1st, the reason why your wife could view paid apps and you couldn't is probably because your phone was not RC33 (the lastest version). Eventually it would have received the over the air (OTA) update.
2nd, here are the steps.
1 - Downgrade to RC29
File : http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAIMG-RC29.zip
Upzip the zip file and copy the DREAIMG.nbh to your sd card.
Hold Camera button on side, Press Power
2 - Update from RC29 to RC30
File : https://android.clients.google.com/u...t.1582cace.zip
Rename to update.zip if need be. Copy to sd card.
Hold Home button, Press Power
3 - Update from RC30 to RC33
File : https://android.clients.google.com/u...0.f06aa9b3.zip
Rename to update.zip if need be. Copy to sd card.
Hold Home button, Press Power
You're welcome![]()

Haha - I love that.
I can see advantages of rooting, and I nearly did it myself to get Google Latitude to work here in the UK, but there's some odd issues with rooted phones that seem very bizarre.
To answer the OP, I can see no reason why your phone won't work with your car charger after rooting. The phone doesn't even (and in fact won't) detect it in any way other than the fact there's power there. Car chargers and mains chargers do not even connect the data lines on the USB socket, they just connect the two power lines. For that reason, I just can't think of any way rooting your phone would affect its ability to charge from certain chargers, because your phone won't be able to tell the difference between a mains charger and car charger.
Does it charge from the mains charger? If so, are you 100% sure your car charger still works? Check it's shoved in properly to both the car and the phone, check the charger fuse, the cigarette lighter socket fuse, make sure your ignition is on, and try another car charger.
Defect, replace it free of charge.

Charger "designed" for G1 or, by any chance, a Motorola phone?
Exactly if your wall charger works your car charger should unless your car charger is defective.

thanks for the help david, you're a life saver
to extorian, i'm just as confused as you are as to why it's not working. all i know is that it did work, i rooted it, then it didn't work. same with my wife's phone (which i also rooted). it's not an official G1 car charger, but it worked fine before rooting. who knows. my wall charger still works though, before and after. i'll let you guys know what happens with the car charger after downgrading
again, thanks guys
just for the record, should i do a wipe before each update? and allow it to boot all the way up and THEN shut down before applying the next update?
