Root to unlock?

Hi there,

I might be getting a G1 (Or the HTC myTouch), but the thing is that i'm in Mexico.
Does rootinh the phone allow using it with other carriers?

On a related note, has anyone used the G1 or myTouch in Mexico? Does edge work at least?

Idk about root unlocking, but you have to call tmobile and tell them you want to unlock your phone they ask for your serial number and all this stuff and then they give you a code by email.

welcome to android community !
rooting the phone does not unluck the phones carrier . you can buy an unlock code from a couple different websites . if you have been a tmobile customer for moe than 6 monthes , they will unlock it . now , about working in mexico on edge , i believe it does .

I'll tell my cousin to call Verizon and get them to unlock it before he brings it here.
I hope it all works out, I really want to ditch the iPhone

how can verizon unlock a tmobile phone ???

They can't, can they? I meant T-Mobile. Sorry :P

Edit:

Out of curiosity, does flashing the radio / sdl / installing custom roms remove the t-mobile unlock? If so, I'm guessing I'll need the actual number used to unlock it, right?
