Default ROOT and PDF & DOC attachments

Did a search, so sorry if I missed it. But, a couple of questions.

    1) If you have root, is it possible to download and save PDF and Word files that come in on POP3 (or even gmail) email?

    2) Otherwise, does anyone know the phone folder where these files are temporarily store while on the phone, and can they be accessed that way?

I spend a lot of time overseas, and going back and forth to the web to retrieve is a pain and expensive. Thanks

I don't think the POP3 email application even downloads attachments.

I suggest mirroring your POP3 accounts in Gmail. That's what I do.

That does not work. POP3 does allow attachments, the problem with it (and Gmail) is it will not allow you to download and save PDF or Word docs. I already "mirror" to my Gmail. Doesn't work unless you go on the Gmail site itself, and --as I pointed out -- not a realistic option while traveling overseas. So... does anyone know if I can download my attachments if I am in root?

What part of it doesn't work? I get POP3 email in my Gmail account all the time.

If you mean on the phone itself (which is what I mean) how do you download a PDF file? Really doesn't matter where it comes it from. I can download a jpg or an mp3 -- but not PDF or Word. The phone will not allow it.

SO... let me rephrase: does anyone know a way to do this? Specifically, does having root help?

If you could use your browser to work with Gmail, you just need something like Download Crutch to get the unsupported files.

    POP3 does allow attachments
POP3 supports MIME content, but the POP3 email application does not. Does rynosaur's reply make more sense to you now?

Ok... let's try this again. I get between 5 and 20 Word or PDF documents a day while traveling overseas. These files are not huge, but around about 200kb. 99% will go directly to my POP3 account (which, of course, my old N80 had no trouble handling) and, of course, they will come in automatically if I set the POP3 email account to check at a given time. So, now, as they come in, I have all these attachments that I cannot use. If I have them fetched from my POP3 to my Gmail, they're still useless, although I can read them (useless, because I need to work on them). Please correct me if I am wrong (and I hope I am), but unless I go to my Gmail web site, (or, my pop3 web site) there is no way I can download them. So, I know we have all been looking for work-arounds on this phone, but I am trying to find a way to DIRECTLY down load them onto the phone without going to the web sites.

Will having root help me do this.

Even if you could get at the temporary files, you'd have to decode the MIME content to get at your attachments. I think having Java knowledge would help you more than having root access. I myself am waiting for the Python interface.

I don't think so. From the quick check I did, I don't see the attachment in my Email app databases folder.

I was told the reason I couldn't download PDF or Word is there is no associated application on the phone, as there is for jpeg or mp3 etc. So, I renamed a 200kb PDF from *.pdf to *.jpg, and sent it to both my pop3 and gmail. I was able to download no sweat, them rename using Astro. Obviously, I could them stick the SD card (or use USB) to get onto my laptop. So... I was wondering, if I had root, if there was anyway of creating an association for those files.

Thanks for your help on this.
