Default Ring only when plugged in?

My old phone was set to vibrate always when unplugged, and ring when plugged in. Any way to do this with the droid?

Yes, but you need an app for it.

The app called "Toggle Settings" allows you to have "profiles" such as those you'd find on other phones. There are 9 profiles in the app (Home, Internet, Location, Low Battery, Meeting, Night, Outdoor, and YouTube), and for each one you can set Airplane Mode, Auto Sync, Bluetooth, Fast Bright, Lock Screen, Orientation, Screen never timeout, Silent mode, WiFi, Brightness, Notification ringtone, Ringer mode (this ring and/or vibrate), Phone Ringtone, Screen timeout, and Volume (Ringer, Music, In-Call, Notification, and Alarm).

It also supports "rules". A rule can fire based on Time (it can be set to trigger on given days of the week too), a Calendar event, Battery less than %, Battery more than %, Charger Connected, GPS Enabled/Disables, or the Keyboard extended or not. When a rule fires, it can activate the profile of your choice, and terminate at a given time, or when the rule is no longer satisfied (e.g. when the charger is unplugged), or when the next profile is activated.

So, in your case, you could set one of the profiles (Low Battery, say) to set the Ring mode to "Ring only". Then set a rule trigger when the charger is plugged in that will activate the Low Battery profile. Done! From then on, whenever you plug the charger in the phone will set to Ring only (i.e. don't vibrate). When you unplug the charger it will revert to the previous setting - probably "Vibrate only" if you've set your home profile to set that.

I just gave that one a try and it didn't work at all. It wouldn't switch profiles when I plugged it in despite setting the rules. Perhaps no 2.0 support yet? It looks like it is what I would need though.

That's odd - I just tried it myself, and it takes about 15 seconds to activate the profile, but it does do it.

Maybe it doesn't work on 2.0, but to be sure you've set it up right, this is what I did:

In Toggle Settings, I went to Menu -> Customize -> Profiles -> Low Battery Profile -> Add new Toggle/settings -> and checked Ring mode. I hit the back button twice, and put a check in Low Battery profile (so it has a green check next to it). I hit back again, and pressed on Rules -> Add new rule -> Charger connected. Then (and this is important), I put a check in Charger connected, as by default a new rule isn't activated, then back two times to get to the main Toggle Settings screen. I then select the profiles tab so I can see all of my profiles. I select the Home profile (or anything other than Low Battery). Plug my charger in, and wait about 15 to 20 seconds and you see the profile change over to Low Battery Profile.

If you see it change profiles it's working. You may need to set the Ring mode to Vibrate only on the Home profile too, or it may stay in Ring only when you unplug the charger.

What I do, in fact, is add every setting and toggle to every profile, and make sure each profile sets absolutely everything the way I want it.

There is an app on Market called Setting Profiles which can be configured to do this. Just change your phone setting to Vibrate and than create profile OnCharger (with sound turned on) and create Rule with condition 'battery connected to charger' activate profile OnCharger
