so in an attempt to keep these threads from going haywire, we've narrowed it down (currently) to one on just getting the update (as in installed), one for having found the update for downloading (of interest to rooted and nonupdated alike) and for non u.s. users. there is also some older threads floating around, hope this helps the confusion stay to a low level

You don't have to root your phone to get the update. Just do the flash update like I did. There are detailed instructions on the xda developers forum.

link please for rooting a uk g1 (rc8) sorry but have missed most thing about rooting as i dident want to root it until i need tethering
