Default Push vs Pull bar code scanning

I didn't know there was a difference, but I found this discussed on slashdot today. Interesting article.

I'll have to say that if I see too much of the "push" model, I doubt if I'd use it then. Or I'd scan the tag and stick the phone in my pocket while the stupid ad played and pull it back out again a minute later after it's (hopefully) done.

    Yes, interesting article! Thanks!

I'm wondering about another application that might be tied to these "pull" type tools. It's a little more "big brother" but I'll bet someone will do it. Imagine if each time an Android-empowered user scanned a barcode to get product information the barcode and location from the GPS were sent to a centralized server. Even if no personally-identifiable information were uploaded, that type of information might be quite valuable. For instance, it could help to identify which types of products people are most likely to scan for competitive shopping or it might rank stores in terms of how many geeks frequent the place. ;-) Likely there is some valuable data to be gleaned in this manner.

    Thoughts?
