POP3/IMAP email client issue is one of the most talked about problem over in the T-mobile Forums. There's huge sticky thread with some 25 and counting pages with people having the dreaded "connection error" issue with POP3/IMAP. I'm still having problem, albeit the "connection error" is less frequent now, my problem used to be over 90%, now I'm looking at about 10-20% upon hitting the refresh button to retrieve or send email.
One user posted in this thread solved this problem by doing the following:
POP3 Mail Client is not reliable - Inbox States Connection Error 95% of the time

I responded on another thread but since your the moderator. My wife and I both have a G1 for our business and use Godaddy for our email hosting but it's still POP. I changed the settings in the "INCOMING" email setting from NONE to SSL and it seems to be much more reliable. I left the "OUTGOING" settings as NONE.
I had the same problem today. While trying to set up POP3 email for the first time the Email app kept choking at the outgoing settings setup dialog, requiring a force close. Email suggests port 110 for incoming and port 25 for outgoing. I finally got POP3 access to my work email by downloading the app K9 from the market AND setting both ports to 110 using TLS, not requiring sign-in for outgoing mail.
I've never been able to get POP email to work properly. Not since I got the phone in October.
I've had *much* more success getting IMAP to work on the G1 connecting to the IMAP server running on my home PC under Ubuntu.
Since I fetch all email to my home machine anyway, I was happy to get that working on my G1. It works exactly as it should....and the way the POP client should have out-of-the box. Not sure what the problem is there. Hoping a future update addresses the issue.
I've setup 4 different emails Yahoo, Yahoo UK, AOL etc and worked fine except when I read them it's still showing unread when I go back, very annoying! And can't select multiple email to delete to or to set as read!
Try and use IMAP setting. My work email was setup using POP3 but I had to use IMAP and also check the SSL setting.
