I was going to post this afternoon that the excitement I feel about Android has not been matched by a piece of technology since my wait for and purchase of the Amiga 1000, but since I'm not a developer I was shy to post it. Well, I just saw this: have posted a short piece on this very subject.
It popped in my head when scanning articles and hitting the name Rich Miner. It reminded me of somebody....
Just like back in 1985 when I was waiting on a transfer, riding the bus home from school (masters...I said I was old...) contemplating buying a slick new Mac and came across the premier issue of AmigaWorld Magazine, I have been blindsided by a smart, savvy, compact, powerful operating system that multitasks like nobody's business. Of course, back then I was young and broke. I joined a users group and even got my job to host the group (at the LA Baha'i Center), but wasn't able to afford the 2 grand required to own that baby until my next student loan came through several months later. And it was sweet -- no hard drive, running programs from 3.5" disks.
and blowing the competition away!
The Amiga's promise was squashed by bad decisions and an unimaginative populace. Commodore made some classic tactical errors from which my favorite pc never recovered. But despite the negative chatter leading up to this announcement and the remnants of proprietary behavior some of the parties are showing (and thinking better of...e.g. removal of the 1GB data limit -- thanks T-mobile!) the OHA, led by Google is a strong collaborative and in a position to avoid many of the Amiga's lone, maverick pitfalls. It seems despite the marketplace that we are the beneficiaries of a learning community.
I almost want to go down to the basement and boot up that classic A1000 with the developer signatures in the case. Almost.
What I really want is to fastforward the clock to October 21 when I will have: 1) payments from two outstanding invoices. 2) finished all proposal writing for the calendar year and be able to focus on work. 3) completed a final course in a series of meditation workshops to focus my purposefulness. 4) found out whether or not I got a fellowship I've applied for and 5) HAVE ONE DAY BEFORE I CAN PUT THAT SEXY BLACK ANDROID IN MY EAGER PALM!! I haven't celebrated Christmas in nearly 35 years, but October 21 is going to be like Christmas eve when you can't sleep knowing that under the tree somebody has put something you have wanted all year. Hmmm...maybe we should organize vigil chats for all those of us too eager to sleep.
"What are you gonna name yours?"
"I'm calling mine Wilbur!"
Amiga was the computer of my dreams. There are still some things it did 20 years ago Windoze is just catching up to. Now there's less than a month before my "Dream"/G1 comes "through" (through UPS no doubt...
).
I can't wait!!
