Installing firmware 1.0 and then upgrading from there. You will lose everything unless you backup

What do you think about jailbreaking?

I am happy to wait for official updates, but am also open to modding my phone. Seems that the cupcake update has mostly been covered with the various jailbreak builds.

In Windows turn on view file extensions... Mac users, just use Terminal and check filenames there.

and ensure update.zip is ACTUALLY update.zip not update.zip.zip

Place it on the root and do the Home+Power, power on sequence and do Alt-L, Alt-S

If this DOESN'T work then you have the following issues:

    1) not correct firmware for your phone (do you have the latest non 1.5 updates)

    2) update.zip is NOT named update.zip (may be update.zip.zip)

    3) SD card is not properly readable, reformat as FAT32 - if it STILL doesn't recognize an update.zip file then use a different SD card - reports from US users doing these update type before is some SD cards did NOT work.

I have upgraded to this and now have decided i want root. Is it possible to get root on this build (CRB17)? Can i downgrade and then root my phone? Once rooted can a phone be unrooted?

    Thanks

    Hey,

I'm on the vodafone network in new zealand where no android phones are officially supported.

I had to have the g1 so I aquired one through a parallel importer. Works great.

Now I want this cupcake update but am not sure how I go about this.

I assume this handset was imported from the states, not europe - is there a way for me to tell for sure?

If it has been imported from the us (it has t-mobile branding on it) where can I get an update.zip to manually update my os?

    Any help/advice/suggestions are much appreciated!!

    Cheers!

and this might be a stupid question but why cant they just put the update as a free download on the marketplace?

yep, it's good Idea, but i don't no why !!! and why google don't put the update on the android site, just OTA ..

The result is the same: we don't care about what google do. We search & found the link for manually update !!

this is after the Deleting files and copying files bit.

now the phone seems stuck in boot mode and wont go back to normal despite much trying including hard reset and reboots.

    any ideas?

I have the same issue now too.
    Any ideas for fix ???
    Thanks.
