    Default Notifycation Vs. SMS Tone!

    Hi.

    I'm looking for a way to diferentiate between various types of notifycation tone on my HTC Dream (G1) handset.

    Under the "Sound & display" settings menu I only have 2 options for audio tones:
    Phone ringtone
    Notification ringtone

    I want/need to find a way to set a different tone for incoming SMS messages than from other notifications. For example when I get a SMS it plays "tone1" when I connect the phone to my computer via USB it plays "tone 2" and so on.

    As far as I have been able to find the phone will play "Phone ringtone" for calls and "Notification ringtone" for everything else.

    As I am in Australia, and with Optus I don't have access to the Android Market for payed apps (I can get free apps), so a third party app which allows for this won't help me

    Any suggestions on how to set a independent SMS tone would be greatly appreciated!

    i think if you go to messages and you hit menu then click settings..it'll say ringtone. and that's where you can change it

    Under
    Menu -> Settings
    I have the following options:
    Wireless controls, Call settings, Sound & display, Data synchronisation, Security & localisation, Applications, SD card & phone storage, Date & time, Locale & text, About phone.

    There is no option for ringtone there. Where there is teh option for ringtone
    Menu -> Settings -> Sound & Display
    The ringtone setting is purely for incomeing calls, not for SMS messages (which I would like to have as a different tone than the ringtone for calls)

    you have to open the messaging application, from the screen where you see all of your text messages, hit menu -> settings -> notification settings -> select ringtone

    There's a free app that's called "Missed Call". It lets you customize notifications for calls, texts, when you plug in the USB, etc.

    The "Notification tone" on Android applies to all notifications (new email, new gmail, new sms, etc). On Android alone, you cannot have different sounds for different notifications.

    Missed Call is the way forward as someone else said previously. It'll allow you to set different tones for loads of different things. You will need to turn off the Android notifications though or you'll get two notifications for things.

    Alternatively, you could use Handcent. It is an improved SMS messaging app that allows you to set your own notification sounds for SMS messages.

    As was stated in an earlier response, it *is* possible to have a different SMS tome from other notifications

    It works

    However I have also found 2 free apps that allow me to do what I want, and give more options. they are:

    "Rings Extended"
    and
    "SMS Popup"

    Rings Extended allows you to set a different tone for anything that has a tone, while SMS Popup gives you lots of options for how your phone will notify you about a new text message.
    As with "Missed Call" (which I haven't tried and can't personally comment on) you will need to disable notification for Rings Extended.

    I recommend both Rings Extended and SMS Popup to anyone else who is looking for a way to do what I was looking for.

    I'd forgotten about the SMS Notifications settings.

    Rings Extended is a must have app.

    I moved away from SMS Popup. I find Missed Call is another must have app, as it gives so many cool features...

    For example, I have it set to display a specific LED colour for SMS messages, flashing at a specific rate, and give a specific vibrate pattern. The same goes for other notifications. That way, I can tell by touch (feeling the vibration pattern), hearing the ringtone, or by glancing at the LED, exactly what notification I just received.

    The paid version also allows you to set these things on an individual contact level - so you could have specific notifications for a SMS message from a particular person, for example.

    Sounds interesting, I will have a look into it.
    I just wish I could get access to paid apps! I know there are ways around it (such as getting a pre-paid sim with another carryer), but I havn't reached a point where I'm *that* desperate yet.
