Haha, go figure, right after posting that I got a notification of email. Though it was for old email that was already in my box.

yup! not a noob here, the settings are set, reset.. changed.. anything.. still only 50/50 itll work. turning the phone off/on got it to work for a bit then they stopped again.

I just asked the same. In Messaging press the menu and then check setting. See if there is anything there.

Mine seems to only be a problem with certain accounts. Some of my extra email accounts notify me of messages (although they're actually OLD messages) whereas some accounts do not notify me at all.

i was having the same issue then i went in and chk off adubile selection and restarted the phone by mistake now every notification makes a sound

Looks like restarting the device solved the problem. At least for the alarm feature...
