I have 0 (ZERO) knowledge of linux & rooting... heck I didn't even know what rooting was or that it was even possible to hack a cell phone until I did the research to see if it was even worth it to BUY the G1.

That said, rooting isn't for everybody and it's probably not for 95% of the G1 users out there, but for the few 5%, rooting is the only way to go. I'm proud to be part of the 5% out there.
my hat goes off to you sir! if i wore a hat. it's one of the few occassions i've seen someone say they actually researched for more than 15 minutes, without asking to be spoonfed. i rooted my ipod touch the other day. i never owned an apple product before and had no idea as to the jailbreak process, although i've heard of qwkpwn or whatever it's called lol. it took me approximately 15 minutes or so of googling and reading a few posts to figure out how to do it. and i didn't register or post one question anywhere. i jailbroke 2.1 and then later, i found a link to the 3.0 update which isn't available to the public yet. so i'm now running 3.0 with stereo bluetooth!
rooting is for kicks and benefits. it's like modding a muscle car. or overclocking your pc. it's definitely not for everyone. some do it just because of the risks involved (me). some do it to add extra features to their device. others do it for all possible reasons. if i bricked my phone while rooting, i'd be pissed off, then i'd laugh, knowing it was MY own doing.then i'd take the g1 apart to learn how to put one back together properly. and then go buy the latest phone. everyday you wake up , life is one huge risk. people die everyday just crossing the street. we're only talking about a cellphone here. i'm not sure why some people take it so seriously.

I could probably read the "how-to" to root.. but then what will I do with it? lol
you can over/underclock , wireless tethering , apps to sd , themes , try out the different android roms out there , know that you are free to try what you want with your phone when you want ( example .. get cupcake much sooner than official update), and more !
here is a VERY easy guide how to do it ....

    lol ' i feel like a pusher now ...
anyways , its not for everyone . if you dont feel a need to root your phone , you shouldnt because there are real chances to ruin your lovely android phone !( its just not very easy)

With my rooted phone, I was able to apply the Hero theme to my G1.

I wirelessly tether my phone to my laptop on a regular basis, I had cupcake running months before any non-rooted phone, and I'm currently on a rom that mixes the best of cupcake and the HTC roms, getting more than anyone without root can.

I own a G1 and ADP1. I've had root access on the ADP1 since I bought it a few months ago. I can count the times I've needed root access on one hand with fingers left over, especially if you omit the setup process (the ADP1 has never had a SIM card in it). My G1 remains in it's original state; I do not have root access on it.

I should probably mention that I'm a software developer and happen to be currently writing an ADC2 entry. I should also probably mention that I've done a full build of Android (which, surprisingly, only took about an hour).

    "epic win" indeed.
I blame this man for most programming problems.

i was only referring to epic win on the posts for and against. not thinking i'm better than anyone because my phone is rooted. just a toy for me, which i really could care less about. thats why i bring it on roofs with me when i'm roofing or torching a rubber roof. if it gets melted, it's only a phone. i have backups anyways.
