Default No UMA Calling on T-Mobile Android Devices: Why?

I dropped by a T-Mobile store today to play with a G1 and a BB Curve 8900 (I'm coming up on my upgrade and am stuck between Android and Blackberry) and get some questions answered. I was disappointed when I was told that neither of the TMo Androids (G1 or myTouch) would support their Hotspot UMA calling service. Does anyone know why this is? Why launch a device that is customizable and does everything internet but lacks TMo's great wireless calling feature?

I still love T-Mobile service and I have yet to have any major problems with them (in my two years I have rarely called Customer Service with questions or issues). I would just like some insight into this. The Hotspot calling would be a great benefit to me in the future (just got promoted, need more minutes!).

Thanks to anyone who has answers!

I think Tmobile is a terrible provider, so I don't really care about their features and what they lack. Just let me have my Android rooted and I'm fine.

From what I remember, something about 3G and UMA are incompatible...don't know if this is specific to T-Mo or to everyone.

Have no idea how much truth there is to this, but it's what I've read.

I was severely disappointed to see that the G1 did not include UMA support (own one since release), and that's one of the sole reasons I even have the thought of leaving T-Mobile and am in the market doing some research on "a" service provider which would provide me a decent signal inside my house.

T-Mobile, you don't have too long to add UMA support in your Android offerings :'(.

in all honesty, be glad you *don't* have it.

I do not subscribe to UMA, yet my 8900 will connect via UMA and drop calls constantly. there is an echo. it's like a crappy connection over VoIP. and it is annoying.

I hear those who do subscribe have the same issues- not all it's cracked up to be.

and TMo does have 3G and UMA enabled in some devices. the BB Onyx/Driftwood will be one when it arrives.

I can only think that they are making more money by not providing UMA. They don't advertise UMA, the sales people don't even know what it does.
Get off this piece of crap TMO network. Sprint (when they get thier android) will have a 4G network, where TMO is still rolling out 3G, Sprint has larger coverage. Sprint has a unlimited everything plan for $99 where as TMO unlimited is $150.

To the gentleman who says UMA is like a crappy VIOP connection. Well sir stop downloading Terabytes of Porn and your connection will be crystal clear.

I got away from sprint due to a ton of dropped calls and went to t-mobile. I am currently using t-mobile with the uma service. It has been great. I have been trying to buy a phone with the android os - uma and a full keyboard I was told by t-mobile the blackberry, older Samsung are currently the only ones left due to an approximate $50.00 cost for the hardware in each phone and that the demand was waining for them. however I think they did a crap job of marketing the application and did not get the interest needed. Their system works well, maybe with enough feedback I would hope they would reconsider uma with android platform on future phones.
