First, post what you have on your phone (ROM, Recovery, SPL, etc) into your sig. That way, we don't have to ask what you have installed so it helps clear things up.

No, your SD card does not automount. You have to mount it everytime you plug your phone into your computer via mini USB cables.

No ROM will create a partition for you. You need to do this yourself. I have 2 methods posted in the thread in my sig, and linked to a third alternative for creating EXT partitions. Read that.

If you can't sign onto your phone to mount the SD card, you will need a SD card reader or learn how to use ADB. There's a guide on it floating around somewhere but you can search for it here or at XDA for that guide.

To mount the sdcard in recovery type the following in adb
    echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file

    to unmount - i believe.
    echo "" > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file

well theres a catch though. you cant flash data to different ROMs because some ROMs use different components that are not compatible with other ROMs. so if you flash your data to one of these ROMs your phone will hang on the g1 screen
