I just got my g1 today, i hope its not that bad..
I love this phone, actually I love android. I dont care much for the phone. There are tons of fun apps and it has a great user experience. As a multimedia device its not perfect but I really enjoy it. I am also about to get rid of it. The battery life makes it impossible to take advantage of all the things the phone has to offer.
I understand that there has been plenty of commentary on the battery life of the G1.
Let me get this out of the way first, I have drained and fully recharged my battery several times. That has not helped at all.
We all know the battery life sucks. Some people are getting better life than others. I am surely not getting the worst. My battery life is probably average for G1 users and that is the real problem.
A typical day in my life involves working overnight from 10 pm to 7am. I unplug the phone just before I leave for work. After I leave work I head to school at 8 am and am there usually till around noon before I head home. Thats 14 hours without a charge. The phone usually dies just before I leave school. In that time my phone usage is as such:
ZERO phone calls (I hate talking on the phone)
A bit of texting but nothing excessive
Some web browsing, mostly checking the news on CNN.com and Facebook.
I receive some emails but rarely send
I stay logged onto aim (HelloAIM) the entire time however it hasnt affected my battery life
I dont listen to music or watch youtube videos. My screen is dimmed to almost the lowest level possible. WIFI and GPS are turned off. I dont get any 3G coverage (even tho T-Mobile says I am in a high coverage area).
I switched, VERY reluctantly, from a Blackberry. I am extremely disappointed. I am going to wait a little while to see if there is any software update that may somehow help the battery life or if a good extended battery becomes available. If neither of those things happen before the end of January I'll pay the early termination fee and leave TMobile and go back to the Blackberry.
Im sorry if this is a crazy rant. Ignore it if you are just going to respond with a rude comment.

how long u had the phone i see people saying that the battery life gets better with time
i have been using mine with up time getting just over 14 hours heavy text and some 3g use and little youtube
and then charging at about the 15 hour if your not using 3g switch it to 2g and edge to save on power it might help
but i will agree the battery life sucks everyone knows this and all we can do is hope for some fix but with any phone like this your not going to get over 24 hour life i mean my iphone would do 20 hours light use and i expect the same from my g1
I won't say it gets better, you'll just find better ways to reserve your battery life.
But I agree with the OP, it's no fun when you have to turn off this and adjust that. just to make sure you can make it through a full day.
I still carry two phones, just in case

Android : Mattc 2.2 Froyo w/Sense 1.5
SDCard : Kingston 16GB Class 2 Micro SDHC
HSPL3: Thanks 2 (Bepe & Cotulla)
Radio : 2.12.50.02_2
I got my phone exactly one month ago.
The story of how I ended up with it is sorta interesting. I got it the day before the blackberry storm was released. I was torn between the G1 and the Storm and couldnt decide. Then that thursday the storms were in stores to play with before the release the next day. I went to best buy and played with one and the UI and OS in general were really sluggish and a major pain in the ass. Compared to the snappiness of the G1 it seemed like a no brainer even though I am a die hard blackberry user.
Well 2 weeks later RIM released a software upgrade that fixed most of the sluggishness in the OS and I am stuck with a phone that every day feels more and more like a brick in my pocket.
call tmobile and ask for a replacement battery . tell them it gets like 3-5 hours light use . tell them that you have tried everything to conserve power and nothing helps , they will send you out a replacement for free and most likely they will let you keep your old one . so you will have a spare in case . if it doesnt work the first time try again . be nice to them . strike up a conversation . i always find that it helps ( with tmobile ) . they sent me one the first time i called without giving me a hassle . now im very happy with the g1 and with tmobile :^)

THis does seem like a Crazy Rant..
JK JK..
but seriously... it something you learn to live with though.
If you like the phone, then why give it up just for the battery life?
But i mean I can't blame you if you like the blackberry better.
I just know personally, the G1 is the best phone that I have ever had. Hands down.
I would not settle for ANYTHING else.. unlesss.... worse case scenario...
A sidekick. =/
Even then, i wouldn't feel complete.
It's called a G1
Well the storm's batt life is worst than the G1. Its still sluggish too.
