Default Is wiping the only cure for a boot loop?

My phone's been running JF 1.5 for a little over a week now, haven't had any issues with it, but today it was acting a bit sluggish, so I did a reboot. When it got to the android logo, it kept looping. I haven't installed any themes or done anything that should affect the os, it just decided it had enough. I've seen people discussing the boot loop, and the only remedy I've seen is wipe the phone. I haven't backed up my data in a few days though, have some text messages I may need later on. Has anyone come across any other way out? I tried reapplying the update, still looping.

Apps, not data. Its the text messages I'm worried about. Nothing I can't do without, but have a couple of numbers I might need.

Yeah, I run backups, had MyBackup pro set to auto backup every day, but for some reason it crashed, I got a force close one day and just never got around to checking it out, last backup was four days ago. I thought a reboot would have restarted everything, I guess not. Lesson learned, if an app force closed on you, go in and recheck the settings.

If you are going to root and/or switch firmware images then be prepared to wipe ALWAYS; in other words backup what you need before moving to new firmware.

So many open mis-reported issues on the JF and Haykuro builds are because people don't want to wipe..

But the thing is, as I said in the opening post, I've done NOTHING to the phone. That's what confuses me. WOrked great last night, last thing I did was install advanced task manager at about 6pm, charged it overnight, then started having issues this morning. Very odd. Well, I just wiped and started over, just didn't want to mess with it.
    MANUAL BACKUPS DAILY! Remember that!

I haven't run into the problem of it not backing up yet, but I do get errors all the time saying the the info is not on the card, but I can actually go to the card files on my computer and see them there. That program has been a lifesaver a couple of times for me, but it still has bugs to work out
