I spoke with a Tmobile rep (dialed 611 on my current phone) and he mentioned the $179 price is only for preorders. didnt say anything else... so im ASSUMING it will be higher once Oct. 22 comes.
Im getting a bit worried on the talk of a price raise for the G1 at stores on release day.
I really hope its still 179$ for news customers
another question: will the 179$ deal still be up for eligable existing customers after october 22nd online?

t-mobile officially never announced that this phone was to be in direct competition with the iphone, but of course it would make sense to price it competitively... thats why i'm thinking instead of going just 10 dollars less, t-mobile took the extra jump and made it twenty dollars less...
anyway, i think existing customers will be able to get the same price if not a little higher, and new customers may have to pay even a little more

According to a couple reps in 3 T-Mobile stores I went to if you are eligible for an upgrade and extend your contract for 2 years you can get the phone for $179. The preorder was in order to skip any lines that might be at stores not a extra savings only for people that preorder.
plus the 18 dollar upgrade fee

Thought you had to pay it either way? It will show up on your bill.
Says on the preorder page in small words: "Taxes, fees, and other upfront and monthly charges may apply, including an $18 upgrade fee."
The Pre-sale FAQs over at Tmonews also says:
Does the upgrade fee apply?
Yes, the standard $18 upgrade fee applies for this offer.

Or did you mean just that jmd2275 forgot to mention it?
I also neglected to mention the taxes on it too...mine ran $11.88. I thought the question was concerning the cost of the phone not the upgrade fee or taxes that are there regardless of the cost of the phone.
