Default How much memory is available?

With a memory footprint of 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash (Correct me if I'm wrong there), how much is available after booting up?

OOB how much of the 256Mb is available? How much of the RAM is available? Which brings us to how many apps can run concurrently?

ROM will be for the firmware and I don't think we'll be able to use it (except for flashing custom firmwares)

    There is 192mb ram.

I *think* 64mb for program memory (sigh ) and 128mb for "storage"

The beauty of the OS is that it will intelligently determine what needs to run and what can go away. It's not like a windows machine where every running program checks it full self in and hogs all the resources. UIs are separate from the functionality of (many? most? all?) the programs themselves, so for instance, there doesn't have to be an "IM program" "running" to receive IMs in the background. The phone can listen for IMs and let you know when they come. When you get one, you switch to that program, and the OS opens it, puts you where you need to be, seamlessly.

I can't say I have NO concerns about the small amount of memory, but I am very impressed with the way the OS handles it, and I know the guys who developed this OS, this phone, and all the apps running on it are WAY smarter than I am, and they determined this would be enough. Time will tell.

I'm not too concerned because honestly I don't have memory problems with my custom-firmwared windows mobile phone that only has around 44mb available for program memory, but more is always better, no?

Open sourced linux kernel with intelligent memory handling? yes plz

It's already better than a phone like the iphone where only one program is running at a time. (other than the core iphone programs like "phone" and "music player"), hence the notifications implemented through android is very exciting!

I think the bigger issue is making sure the apps downloaded from the android store can be installed onto your microsd card, otherwise 128mb is not much space considering my ipod touch has roughly 2 gigabytes worth of apps/mail/calendar items. We already know photos and music is automatically routed to the sd card, but not anything else.

I really hope you can, but I couldn't find any evidence from the leaked t-mobile g1 manuals. I'm envisioning something like this: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/cms/node/341 should be how its done, but I didn't see any options like that from the g1 manual.......

Awesome! thanks for the tip Vincent! I didn't see that option in the manual but looks like you've calmed my biggest fear..

Wow, that is amazing! Try that on Windows Mobile I don't think it could even launch that many at once.

Could you put the memory questions to rest? I'm reading the guide page by page, maybe it's in there, but what amount of memory is used for storage and what is available for program access (like RAM in a PC).

Sorry, I don't think we can put these memory questions to rest...

The more I think/research about it, and reading through the leaked manuals (page by page), I don't think Vincents or your post answers the question of whether the applications are downloaded to your memory card, which would be the way everyone would want it. All that pictures tells us is that there is an option to eject the microsd card and/or see how much space is available on the microsd card. A video here ([ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU2PwjRWUdE[/ame] 1minute 55 seconds in) shows there's no option to choose your download path, and since there's no mention of any setting point to change the download path in the manual, it's either being downloaded to the phone memory (256mb) or your microsd card...

i don't think you give google enough credit... i'm 99.9 percent positive programs will run from the memory card without even doing a hint of research... granted the kernels that will be running on a mobile os will be a fraction of the size of their desktop counterparts, that RAM can easily be filled up... if windows can do it, the G1 can do it and better...

and after doing 2 minutes of research and taking a look at the architecture of the android software stack, it appears you can... i may have interpreted it wrong, and the phone hasn't been released to the public yet so theres still a viable chance for me to be wrong, but there isn't too much that google has done wrong with this phone that won't be fixed via firmware upgrade
