As of right now, the only map applications that utilize the GPS require an internet connection to download the map tiles each time they are displayed.
We'll have to wait and see if there are any 'navigator' apps that store their data on the SD card.
Hi All this is my very first post!
Well the lunch date of the g1 is getting closer and closer!
An Additional info about the phone is accumulating however, i cannot make out the info for the gps!!!!
Arg by now i have read that it has a GPS Chip, now Will a data plan be REQUIRED to used that chip?
In the past i had a phone (eten) that add a GPS chip (SIRF III) and i did not need a Subscription of a Data Plan to use it
needing 3G to use GPS sounds stupid... And where am I supposed to go when i have no 3G signal????
Anyway If there is a GPS Chip Can I or Cant I Get GPS with NO data plan.
If no, is this a Hardware issue or a software? in other word since its open source should i just wait foe someone that write a soft that will let me use this
if the data plan is req. because of the maps, the G1 support a microSD up to 16gb.
Sorry if this is a repetive post, but i could not get a straight anwser...
Thanks!

I believe the G1 will have a SiRF Star III chip (which is GOOD!), but as already stated, we *think* the maps will have to be downloaded via the network on-the-fly.
However, many articles claim that GoogleMaps come "preloaded" which implies they are local to the phone. Seems unlikely, but possible I suppose.
Take a look at www.andnav.org
The developers are looking to release a nav app and are in talks with NAVTEQ to supply the maps (locally).
This simply means that the app comes pre-loaded. The articles are talking about "All the Google goodies preloaded on your G1 (GMail, GTalk, Google Calendar, Google Maps, etc.)".
I guess Google could always surprise us, but the way every version of Google Maps has been written is to download map tiles on the fly, and the caches are cleared after a short time of not being used.

Loading the map somewhere else the via Internet is just a matter of time!!!!
I am Just (hopefully) glad that this is not a Hardware issue!!!!
man i GPS that req a subscription well its just not a GPS, i mean this is google and tmobile right this is not verizon with their GPS wannabe right?
I mean we are paying taxes all ready to maintain those GPS sat. and the gov. call those public goods, why the heck is Tmo trying to get a share of the pie??!!! I mean heck for once the Gov. let us use our public good for "free"

maybe we can...."barrow" their data and super impose it with this G1 Hardware....???
Thanks Guys!
i'll be selling my bluetooth gps if garmin doesn't make garmin mobile xt for android. or i'll just keep it and continue to use it with my tytn. gps without turn by turn voice prompts? what good is that. so with google maps, that means, for now at least, that while using it, i have to look at my phone while i'm driving?
