Hello Everyone,
I've ordered my G1 and I'm really looking forward to it. One thing has me concerned is contacts!! Since there is no sync app and it seems gmail's contacts is the only thing we can use. I wanted to start preparing for my new phone by moving all my Outlook 2003 contacts to gmail's. I've tired using the import feature in gmail and it doesn't work very well with the outlook cvs file. I have around 300 contacts. The fields that gmail uses and Outlook uses seem to be way off. Like outlook uses fields for street, state, zip and gmail only uses Address. Same type of thing goes name if you have no name and only a company name gmail won't import it. Does anyone know of a good 3rd party app that can solve this? I don't want to spend hours fixing up the CSV.
Thanks,
LK
Very good question, I'm extremely interested in this as well.

well can you migrate your outlook contacts to your gmail contacts online.. ??
if so .. you just do that.... and now you will never lose your contacts... when you lose your phone .. your laptop .. or when your desktop crashes..
I'm more worried about the TASKS feature.. im a big TASK user on outlook .. and Gmail has none of that...

Try that. If it doesn't work, I don't know what else to try other than manually entering them.
I haven't seen any 3rd party apps and this is the only way I've found to do it. I'll be trying it soon.

Sorry to say this feature doesn't work very well. If you only have a few contacts like 15 or so it's not so bad. When you have a phone book with like 100 contacts in it, it really sucks. Gmail is not really made for a contact book. It works great for storing email address and IM address causes that's what it's made for.
I'm hoping T-mobile is the solution for this. I know the sidekicks work like this and use some T-mobile's contact manager? I'm not a sidekick user, anyone with a sidekick or used one before know if it has some type of importer? I've been a Windows Mobile or blackberry user most of the time.
I'm going to give it a shot. Fortunately I don't have any addresses saved on Outlook/Windows Mobile so it shouldn't give me any errors. If anything I'll type all the contacts in manually. I have until October 22nd to do it and probably won't ever have to do it again.
I just export from outlook to a csv and import into google contacts from that. i have done it multiple times and have only came across a few issues here and there. Now i'm just updating all the info in my google contacts to prep for my G1. I want GPS to my contact's house out of the box without issue.

I've done some searching on Tmo site and there is some web based address book manager that Tmo uses for some phones and it does support importing from Outlook. Here is the link https://my.t-mobile.com/plan/learn/addressbook.aspx my phone (BB curve) wont give me access to it.
I have a Mac using Address Book.
I'd see if y'all can export Outlook to CSV, find a Mac and import into Address Book, and sync to Gmail using this. It worked flawlessly for me, all contacts intact (all 250 of them).
Gmail reformats Address Book's address fields into a single field without issue.
There are two ways for Mac Address Book to sync with Gmail:
1. Sync and iPod or iPhone with iTunes with Gmail syncing enabled.
2. Download/Install SpanningSync demo ($25/year or $65/lifetime purchase after 15 days). This is the better option, it supports contact photo syncing between address book and Gmail as well.
I know for you windows guys this isn't a great option, but at least it will get all your established contacts over to Gmail...sure beats importing each contact by hand.
