the OTA's were great.


they're exactly as he describes:

It's done completely in the background, you can't even tell it's happening. The phone chooses a time when not a lot of data is being used, starts the download, and notifies you when it's done. The user chooses whether now is a good time to complete the update (reboot), or if they should be reminded later.

however, with the most recent update for the Sidekick LX, there was a way for trick the system into prematurely downloading the update (hehe) so if there is an OTA upgrade for the G1, hopefully you can get it sooner.


the last ota for the SKLX was released in mid.. july, i believe, and the dispersal was random. hopefully that wont be as irritating with the G1.. i CAN NOT wait. i have no patience -- 10/22 cant come soon enough.

there was a user that already went through an ota (higher up t-mobile / google employee if i remember correctly) ill try to remember where i found it.

he said it didnt give him an option and it just updated. but only took about 2 minutes between download and restart of the phone.

I also remeber reading that all the phones that have been out before the launch would have an ota update, but the phones that are coming out now would receive the update at the factory.

I received a system update this morning. A prompt came up asking me if I wanted to install an update and that the phone would be restarting. I chose to go ahead with the update, the phone restarted, the update installed, and my phone went back to working just as it was before.

But is this carrier specific? Say if you unlock your phone and switch to another carrier, will you stop receiving updates?

The update will trickle in, only when its fully downloaded and waiting on the phone will the G1 let you know that its waiting and ready to be executed.

Since the updates come from the Carrier, and the G1 is from T-Mobile, I doubt that AT&T would be sending it out to it's customers over their network.

Anyone has any ideas if Google or HTC will come up with alternative methods for software updates?

OTA is fine if the updates actually got to everyone in a timely fashion. I have yet to receive the update and my phone has been connected to wifi most of the time for 4 days now, so speed shouldn't be an issue.

They really need the ability to check for updates manually. I'm fine with it updating OTA, but at least let me update. Some of the fixes are pretty important.

I may be wrong but I believe OTA would update through G/EDGE/G3 not through WiFi.
