Looks like I'll be using method #4 for now:

Workaround available. Problem solved.
Some of you people sound like complete tools trying to dictate to someone else how to manage their affairs. How about you worry about your phone and your plan and let him worry about his phone and his plan.
but it's a simple philosophy...there's a contract, you sign it and you follow what says on it.
I guess I don't understand where the mix up is...
My BlackBerry data plan was $20 for unlimited data and SMS (not MMS). The G1 plan I have is $35 for unlimited data, SMS/MMS, and HotSpot access. Considering normal data plans are 20, then 15 for unlimited SMS/MMS, I call that fair. Unlimited HotSpot is just icing on the cake.

I bought a PHONE because it has WLAN capability and uses Open Source software throughout. I did not agree to keep data on the phone forever.
Here is what I "signed" when I bought my G1:
Perhaps you signed something else?
I also signed up for a G1 Data Plan. I NEVER agreed to KEEP the data plan. Not even for one day. I've signed up for data plans on other phones in the past, sometimes at the time of purchase.
Simple fact is that I've given T-Mobile over $15,000 of business (not including phone purchases) over the last 6 years and NOT ONCE have they required a data plan to provide updates for my phones. Not even on a BlackBerry. As a result, I'm SURE that NOWHERE written in my contract is any requirement to have a data plan.
As I said, though, problem solved.
