explain text chat?

in the new android os there is a thing called text chat i know that is the text messaging function but what is so special about it? it looks different then other text messaging functions on mobile phones

Im assuming that it handles texts, as a computer would handle IMs, strung together, and easier to use.

Threaded SMS is so nice. With WM6.1 it makes texting so much easier because you can see exactly what you're replying to and what you sent last.
