I would imagine, that as the G1 is normally restricted to T-Mobile in the UK, and not Orange there are extremely few G1s on the Orange network, and hence they currently have no financial nor contractual need to install and provide the OTA firmware update infrastructure to deliver firmware updates to the G1. This assumption is possibly confirmed by people with G1s on other UK networks who didn't automatically get the 1.0 to 1.1 update.

I could be wrong of course. Orange may support it. The people who were on other UK networks who didn't get 1.1 may have had other issues (e.g. wrong APN settings).

You can always go through the procedure to root your phone and manually install firmwares of various flavours (details instructions can be found in many places on this site).

You may be able to use someone else's T-Mobile SIM and enter the T-Mobile's APN settings into the phone and install the firmware OTA like that.

I'd wait a couple of months after everyone else in the UK on T-Mobile claims to have got 1.5. If, by then, you haven't received it you can use one of the alternative methods to get it.

I think only t-mobile customers will get them. They have to let you unlock the phone if you want to use it on another network but they don't have an obligation to provide software for phones on other networks. I think they'd expect Vodafone customers to pester Vodafone for their updates. There's the slight possibility they have not locked this down but I reckon to block updates to people from outside their network is trivial for them.

However, there'll be an update.zip file coming to phones soon so it's just a matter of time before that is available on the web. There doesn't seem to be a lot of activity for providing updates for people who's unrooted g1s are no longer on t-mobile...
