so anytime i type in a friend's name in the "to" field of messages...it doesn't come up with any numbers and somtimes only their email address...help?

Did u save your contacts on your phone? if not thats probably the reason.

Hm... Weird, I have the same problem too. But the contacts I added by hand on the G1 itself shows up on the list just fine. The ones I synced through GMail don't show up, only the email addresses. I wonder if this is a bug?

That's weird, I added all of my contacts through Gmail sync and they work perfectly just typing their beginning letters....

Just got my G1 today (what an awesome phone ) and was having the same problem.

First text I sent I had to select the number from the contact list and then type the text - only problem was that I accidentally hit enter 5 characters in... there it went!

I had also synced all of my contacts through Gmail, the issue was resolved by making sure that each contact was set to mobile. This is a little odd as when you select a contact through the contacts icon you can send a sms message to any number.

I recommend that you download the app ChompSMS, very goood app.
