Usually, the checkerboard is a place holder until the phone loads the map.

Has it stayed that way for a long time?

    Padded,

Maybe he's referring to something else besides the map placeholder. I've had the dreaded checkerboard on my phone as well, and then I've gone to another screen and it disappears. For a minute, I thought some pixels had died or something. It was on the top right hand corner of my screen, and it went away asap after I moved to another screen and then came back.

    is it that?

Maybe he was standing on one of those gian checker boards at the time?

    Did you look down?

Try zooming in or out. You might be zoomed in too close.

yes I have had that as well. As stated above, It is the place holder for the map until it displays. Most the time it is gone in a flash but I have had times when it says for WAY to long. I think most of the time it means that you are not getting a strong enough data signal. Try moving to a different location or just try reloading the map.

    Hope that helps.
